The department was established in 1968 under the name of the Department of Arabic-Persian Languages ​​and Literatures within the Faculty of Letters of Atatürk University and started its undergraduate education in the academic year of 1974-1975. In 1983, the Department of Oriental Languages ​​and Literatures was divided into two departments, the Department of Arabic Language and Literature and the Department of Persian Language and Literature, and started to apply two separate programs and give separate diplomas. Prof. Dr. Ahmet SAVRAN, Prof. Dr. Nasuhi Ünal KARAARSLAN, Prof. Dr. Saime İNAL SAVİ and Prof. Dr. M. Nazif ŞAHİNOĞLU is one of the important names that formed the basis for the establishment of the department.
